Books

There are now three richly illustrated books, about Morris and Alice Meredith Williams, researched and written by Phyllida Shaw and designed by David Grey. The latest is The Drawing Master. The illustrations of Morris Meredith Williams, with 212 pages and more than 600 illustrations. Morris supplemented his salary as a part-time drawing master at Fettes College (1905-1929) by illustrating books for young readers. The original drawings almost always became the property of the publisher, but Morris kept drafts of some of them. This book shares most of his published drawings and where possible, pairs his work in progress with the final version, revealing his extraordinary attention to detail.

An Artist’s War. The art and letters of Morris & Alice Meredith Williams (The History Press, 2017) tells the story of Morris’s three years in the army, in France (1916-19), told through his sketchbooks and his letters to Alice.

Undaunted Spirit, The art and craft of Gertrude Alice Meredith Williams (Independent Publishing Network, 2018) is an illustrated biography tracing the development of Alice’s practice, from her training at Liverpool School of Architecture and Applied Art at the end of the nineteenth century to her being elected an Associate of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1928.
